Marina del Rey was originally conceived as a giant park to provide recreation for the ten million citizens of Los Angeles County. How, then, did it change into what is largely a housing tract for a few thousand residents with an expanse of shopping malls? How did the 6,000 or so small boat slips get chopped to almost half? Read all about it within these pages.

Interesting but very thick, yet short read. I bought it hoping to learn more about the history of the Marina, but it mostly focuses on the politicians and businessfolk engaging in corruption using the Marina land as bribes and kickbacks. The author is passionate and tries hard to paint background interest and color to make it a more engaging read, but most of the book's 83 pages read like a work of investigative journalism, the author's former career. Good stuff if that's what you're into.Product details

Chinatown County The SellOut of Marina del Rey Bruce Russell 9781304850942 Books Reviews
I have grown up with this story and didn’t know all the facts. Only guessed and surmised some. Great piece of history of the largest small craft harbor in the world and machinations of the five people who run it. Russell has either known all the facts or has done an excellent job of research. But most important he put it all down in a readable story. For those who live with it, it provides reason—not right, but a better understanding for it all. Exellent writing and story telling of a big chapter in Los Angeles history. Let's do a movie! It is a “good read.” Reta Moser
I love the Marina and feel sad about recent developments. This little book explains the under-handed dealings that have been going on in violation of the original intent of the Marina. Yet Russell gives us hope that there is still time to do something about it. Normally I have difficulty getting thru a book about political intrigue, however this fast-paced book has just enough humor to make it an easy read.
The author (who interviewed me ), turns out to be a very accomplished journalist with an entertaining story of the corruption entangling and then enveloping Marina del Rey by greedy developers and Los Angeles' corrupt county leaders. It is amazing that he is able to steer clear of the complexities of leases and Environmental Impact Reports (EIRs) and still gets at the truth. That is because he weaves the story around the collapse of the LA Times as a investigative news organization by discussing the economic pressure on the News business. He contrasts the early days of wide open corruption exposed by the enterprising reporting of the papers reporters compared to their silence in the last ten years. In the old days the corrupt were ferreted out and went to prison, now they do their work unscrutinized by the press. I wish Russell could have spent more time investigating the Disbarment and jailing of my Lawyer, Richard Isaac Fine. But he does good job on the great HUD coverup, and especially of the decline of the California Coastal Commission charged with protecting the larges small craft harbor in the world. It is a good read.
Read It, and reflect on the current state of the rule of Law in America.
Interesting and controversial - not really long - what is the remedy here?
